With Coward, Lukas Dhont has crafted another stirring film which is a testament to, as the loaded title suggests, what conventional perceptions of bravery were in 1916 (and still are today) and how secretive one had to be about one's feelings in the company of men.
In the case of this film, the testosterone fuelled atmosphere of WW1 where young men were expected to be brave and fearless it was even more difficult and it was something many young men could not be. Whatever their makeup--in the case of this film a young father simply wants to retrun home to his children and this too is considered a 'weakness'.
