About the Event

Bromley: Light after Dark  was made over a period of 5 years by film maker Sean McDonald who got to know his subject and his family very well. This is self evident in this very enjoyable documentary (it's laugh out loud at times)  which gives the audience  a fly-on-the-wall view of his practice, his non stop motion life and reveals his phobias and anxieties with a casual air that doesn't disguise his internal troubles that are never far from the surface.

Bromley is one of Australia's most popular and collectible artists. He is both painter and potter and the scope and range of his activity, all vividly depicted here is mind boggling.  Like Warhol, he takes a lot of his influence from popular culture and like Warhol churns out work on an industrial scale.

Many years ago  he made the life-changing decision to commit his whole being to something meaningful; his artwork. Finding contentment with family came later and his wife Yuge and their young children figure here too, adding a counterwight to the pull of creativity and the constant anxiety he deals with.

Interviews with friends and admirers like actor David Wenham, musicians and critics ( a frank Andrew Frost)  add honest perspectives and insight on the Bromley's creative process and the commercialisation of his art and this one of best documentaries on an Australian artist one could wish for.

Enjoyable, colourful and meaningful, it's a worthy closing night film and best of all Bromley will be here when we host a Q&A after the screening.

This is on the Festival circuit and won't be theatrically released until 2024 so come along and celebrate a great creative life and a genuine Festival experience.
